Get in the loop! In geothermal systems, heat energy is exchanged between an underground sealed piping loop filled with circulating water and an indoor, high-efficiency heat pump. Heat from the ground (geothermal) is absorbed by the water as it passes through the buried piping. The heat pump then extracts the heat energy from the warmed water and transfers the hot air to your home. In the summer months, the process is reversed to provide comfortable, cool air conditioning for your home.
Due to its efficiency in reaching desired temperature settings throughout the year, geothermal systems greatly reduce operating costs for both heating and cooling. A fossil fuel furnace may be 80-90% percent efficient; a geothermal heat pump – also known as a ground source heat pump – is an amazing 450% efficient!
