Natural gas is an odorless, colorless fuel used for home heating methods such as in furnaces, heat pumps, and boilers, as well as providing heat for a cooking stove. It is one of the easiest ways to heat your home and support America’s own economy since we have our own reserves of natural gas readily available in pipelines that potentially could be connected to your home.
Pennsylvania allowed local utility companies continue as the only distributor of natural gas in a particular service area. In 1999 as the deregulation occurred, utility companies were required to deliver natural gas to their residential and commercial properties through their pipeline regardless of who the actual gas was bought from. This occurrence is why in Pennsylvania you will see a charge on your natural gas bill for distribution of natural gas. This distribution charge goes to the utility that delivers the gas and a separate commodity charge for the natural gas product is collected by the utility, but passed to the supplier.
Your utility company is your default supplier if you choose not to change to another supplier. Under the Pennsylvania Utility Commission’s guidance, you now have a choice when it comes to natural gas. With so many providers available, make sure to take the time to compare rates, cancellation fees, lock-in time period and what happens when your contract is up. It is important to make sure you are notified when your contract is due for renewal and if you will be charged at a variable rate without a renewal of the contract.
